Volunteer Tutor Scheme
If you would like to gain an insight into what it is like to be a teacher or you enjoy working with children then this is the project for you! You can volunteer as a general classroom assistant for one morning/afternoon per week in a local primary school.
Due to the popularity of the scheme and the limited number of spaces we are able to provide, all volunteers will be asked to complete a few short questions explaining why you would like to be involved with the scheme etc. and decisions about places will be made on the basis of these questions.
What training is given?
Training is given to students on the School Tutor Scheme as part of Skills Training, the Students’ Union training scheme. Please note that it is compulsory to attend the training in order to become a volunteer for this scheme. The training session date for the next academic year 2018-19 will be notified in due course (details available to the successful candidates), this will explain all about the scheme and cover child protection. Successful applicants will be contacted to sign-up to the training.
Due to changes in the law there is limited need for School Tutors to be police checked due to volunteering with children. These checks are carried out by the DBS (Disclosure and Barring Scheme) You will be told if your school and role requires you to have a DBS check.
Once you become a volunteer you will find our Volunteer Policy a very useful guide. This handbook will tell you all you need to know about your rights and responsibilities as a volunteer.
