ABOUT SALSA DANCING
Salsa Society offers members the chance to experience many different styles of dance within the latin genre. The main ones you will encounter are Salsa, Bachata and Rueda, however there are many more such as Cha Cha Cha, Merengue, Reggaeton, and Kizomba. You may encounter these through guest workshops or at Salsa parties.
- SALSA is a lively latin dance done to 8-beat music. It is danced with a partner, where one person is the leader and the other is the follower. The leader leads the follower through a series of moves, such as turns and movement patterns. It is a very sociable dance.
- BACHATA is a partner dance originating from the Dominican Republic. The dance changes direction every 4 beats and includes body movements unique to this style. Similar to Salsa, there is a leader and a follower. This style is slower than Salsa, but equally as fun!
- RUEDA is Cuban salsa danced in a circle or 'wheel' made up of two or more couples. Each couple is made up of a leader and a follower. The Rueda is led by a caller who tells the leaders the next move by shouting it out. Many of the moves involve changing partners which makes for a very sociable and exciting dance!
