URB Celebrates 50th Anniversary with 50 hour live show!

University Radio Bath has reached a momentum milestone as it reaches its 50th anniversary!

To celebrate the occasion, 29 different presenters from URB (University Radio Bath) took on a 50-hour live show between 12:00 December 14 to 14:00 December 16. The group ran 20 separate shows across the course of the 50 hours and played over 1750 minutes of music in aid of Open Up Music, a Bristol based charity that makes music more accessible to young disabled people. Open Up Music commented that, ‘young people with disabilities unfortunately are for the most part excluded from ensemble music making, in schools and music groups. So not many play instruments, become music professionals, orchestral players or composers. Since 2007, our award- winning programmes have created new opportunities for them to be musicians and making their own music, not just listening to the music of others.’

Each hour of the live show played tribute to the corresponding year of URB’s history, with music handpicked specially from the music team at URB. The presenters also shared statements from alumni, who discussed their memories of URB over the years. In case you missed the event and want to catch up, CampusTV also live streamed the entire event and even headed out onto the Parade for some live broadcast opportunities.  There were over 1000 views on the live stream on Youtube and the Plug also livestreamed to their happy hour, which resulted in 50 song requests for Christmas music!

Station manager Lucy commented ‘As station manager, I am so proud of everyone that took part and grateful to anyone that listened, donated, or watched. I’d like to say a big thank you to all alumni that took part by sending in voice clips describing what URB was like in that year. The biggest well done is in order for The Dig boys, Atish, Thaddeus and Toby, who did 25 of the 50 hours. Here’s to another 50 years of University Radio Bath!’

We wanted to say a huge congratulations to URB on an amazing 50 years, and a big well done for their event, which has already raised an amazing £1106.12 for Open Up Music – and donations are still open! We can’t wait to see what you achieve in the next 50 years!
