Stop the Taxi Tax!

SU Community Officer and President Jimena have recently been involved in some external campaigning for Stop The Taxi Tax, a price hike which will see 20% VAT added to private hire and minicab journeys.

Crusaders have estimated the average price increase will be a huge £200 per year, with 7 out of 10 Britons opposing the tax amid warnings it will affect the vulnerable the most.

Different business groups, such as the Federation of Small Business, the Beer and Pub Association and women’s safety charities have all joined forces to call on the Chancellor to scrap the tax ahead of a planned Parliamentary event next week.

Community Officer Hanna said “I am worried about the price increase as, taxi taxes compromise student safety by discouraging them from using safer transportation options when needed. Such financial strains hinder their access to essential modes of transport and force them to put costs above accessibility and well- being, which is a big problem”.

So, what can you do to have your say? A petition has been launched to call on the Government, specifically the Chancellor to step in and stop the 20% VAT hike – head to the website to have your say!
