On Thursday 18 April, the Annual SU Awards lit up the stage with a celebration of dedication, talent, and commitment from The SU’s amazing student groups. With over 500 nominations from a huge variety of SU groups, the shortlisting process was not an easy task.
The ceremony was held at Komedia in the City Centre hosted by Alumni Jordan Edwards and attended by over 230 students. The audience was treated to two stunning performances from Dance Soc and ChaOS’s Cantus Choir, leaving everyone blown away by the talent on display.
Ten Awards were presented throughout the evening, each shining a spotlight on groups for their commitment to events, activities, inclusivity, community engagement, and more.
Jiji, Hanna, David, and Abbie from The SU Officer Team presented the awards alongside SU Chief Executive Ryan Bird and Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian White.
One of the standout moments of the evening was ‘The Rob Tyrell Award for Outstanding Contribution’. This award recognises the achievement of an individual who has gone above and beyond, with multiple roles and dedication to The SU. All the shortlisted students in this category truly are amazing, and the winner Sofia Onate Fernandez, is a perfect example of someone who gives everything to The SU.
There was much anticipation for the ‘Best Overall Group’ Award, with seven shortlisted groups the atmosphere was electric. We are delighted to award Dance Soc with the award, from the screams it was clear that Dance Soc were ecstatic to win the ‘big one’, and was a perfect way to end the evening.
Reflecting on the event, JiJi, SU President said “It’s hard to sum up just how much of an impact our SU Groups have made to the SU this year. We have built and continue to improve a community of students to be proud of. Whether it is on stage or backstage, on the filed wearing Blue and Gold, or in another city for a competition. Our student groups really deserve the spotlight. I want to thank each and every student for a year filled with wonderful memories and achievements”
