Be pART of the ART

To celebrate Freshers’ Week 2024 we are inviting students to be pART of the ART and contribute to a new 'Paint-by-Numbers' mural that will be displayed in The Edge. We have an exciting opportunity for a budding student artist or designer to create the winning mural design!

We are inviting students to enter our competition by submitting a creative, original, vibrant design for the mural. The winning design’s outline will be transferred onto a board approximately 3x1.5m and students will be invited to come to the Edge during Freshers' Week to colour with Posca paint pens.

What can I design?

The creative freedom is all yours and we’re excited to see what you create! Thee are some themes that we would encourage you to think about, as we want all students to relate to the finished mural:

• The SU values (sustainability, diversity and inclusivity, community, wellbeing)
• Student life
• The Edge building and creativity

What should I bear in mind?

• The ratio for your design should be 2:1 and in landscape orientation.
• As the mural will be completed as a paint-by-numbers, your design should contain a maximum of eight colours. It will be completed in Posca PC-7M paint pens, so you pick from their available colours. One of the colours should be the ‘ Dark blue’ to represent the SU blue. 
• Your design should contain the SU logo somewhere within it.

• Your design should contain the year ‘2024’ somewhere within it.
• Visual style: bear in mind that your design will be scaled up for the final mural and become a giant paint-by-numbers! Your design should not contain too much fine detail and as it will be coloured with paint pens, only block colour will be possible. See examples below.
   

How do I submit my design?

• The deadline for submissions is midday on Wednesday 21 August.
• Designs should be submitted via our Microsoft form
• If you have any issues with the form, please send your design to su-arts@bath.ac.uk with the email subject “Be Part of the Art Mural Competition”. All submissions should be done electronically, no hard copies will be accepted.
• You may enter as a group or as an individual.

The Judging

• The winning design will be selected by a panel of SU staff and officers from the Community and Arts teams.
• The judges will review all entries and submissions will be judged on their artistic merit and how well the design encompasses the suggested themes.
• The winner will be notified by 23 August 2024

What happens if I win?

• Ideally, the winning artist/designer will be available to give some of their time between 12-19 September to help transfer the design’s outline onto the mural board. You may also want to be involved throughout the mural painting in Freshers’ Week – it should be great fun!
• The SU team is here to support you, work out the finer details, and oversee the project as a whole. We may need to work with you to make some minor changes to your design so it is suitable for the final mural.
• If your design is chosen, we will need to have an agreement with you that we can display the final mural and use it for marketing within The SU. When displayed, the mural will always feature a label crediting you as the artist.

The Prize:

The winning design will receive a £150 Bath Gift Card upon completion of the mural preparation (the transfer of the outline).

The Small Print - Image rights 

The SU will retain the rights to the physical mural and have full freedom to use the mural in any digital promotion and include in photographs/videos. Credit will be given to the designer where possible. The designer will reserve the right to also share digital photographs/videos of the mural with correct credit to the collaboration with the SU in any public materials.
