Dance Society reports an amazing success in the recent Loughborough Dance Competition, taking place over Saturday 9, and Sunday 10 March. It is one of the largest Students’ Union Dance Competitions and one of three competitions DanceSoc is participating in this season.
Rehearsing twice a week since October, the competing teams have put in hundreds of hours of effort that has clearly paid off. The competing teams were Contemporary, Tap, Ballet, Lyrical, Jazz, Hip-Hop and Commercial Dance. They also collaborated with Bath Indian Dance Society in the Wildcard category. For the first time, DanceSoc entered the advanced categories instead of intermediate, due to the belief they had in their dancers and choreographers. Scores are based on ratings in categories such as costume, choreography, musicality, and originality, with competition fierce that placing is a huge success for everyone involved.
Leaving on a 04:00 coach on Saturday morning, the dancers arrived in Loughborough at 08:00 for the first day of the competition. Ballet, Contemporary, Jazz and Wildcard competed on that Saturday, with awards later in the evening. Wildcard took third place in their category and DanceSoc member Libby Friend-Smith won Best Dancer in the whole competition.
Sunday saw Commercial, Lyrical, and Hip-Hop compete in their advanced categories, with Lyrical taking second and the Hip-Hop girls and boys coming in third. The full results can be found on the Loughborough Dance Competition Facebook page.
It was not just DanceSoc up there, it was a weekend away for our mascot Duck Norris to support all the teams. He was a huge hit with the other university teams and made Bath really stand out. Overall, a long but rewarding weekend for DanceSoc. To quote one member ““it was so exciting to spend time with all our teammates and compete at one of the toughest university dance competitions. To come out with awards is so surreal and we’ve made DanceSoc history!”
Their next competition is on the 24 March in Surrey, for both Intermediate and Advanced teams, so keep an eye on their SU page and their social media to see how they do.
