The first walking day trip of Semester 1 headed to Exmoor, on the basis that neither of the walking sec’s had been before (always a great way of picking a destination!). A route (involving Somerset’s highest pub), was prepared in advance, and after a not-too-early start, lots of M5, and some more fun B-roads, the car park was reached, and the walk began, with 17 people heading out onto the moor. The rain, mentioned frequently in emails the week before, held off just long enough to lull everyone into a false sense of security, only to start with full enthusiasm as soon as open moorland was reached, for maximum wind-driven effect. This inclement weather was a major cause of the lack of photos!
After some brief navigational uncertainty, the top of Dunkery Hill, the park’s (and Somerset’s) high point was achieved, and lunch was swiftly dealt with.
Heading down from the top, the terrain proved pretty muddy, but the weather improved marginally, keeping everyone in good spirits as we walked back towards the car park, and the promise of a warm pub. The ‘Rest and Be Thankful’ reached, beverages were consumed, rugby watched, and hands warmed before the drive back to Bath.
Exmoor proved itself to be a great walking destination, particularly for a day trip, with not too long a journey time, varied terrain, and weather every bit as soggy as Dartmoor’s. Many thanks to everyone who came along, and especially Nick, Andy and Rich for driving.
