Brecon Beacons 2024 Trip Report - 10th of Feb 2024
This year's Brecons Beacons day trip was a great one! Read below to find out about a rather eventful day.
Armed with caffeine and questionable enthusiasm, we stumbled out of bed, ready to conquer the day. We started bright and early and packed into our MPVs and headed off to Wales.
Driving there was an experience in itself. We were interestingly given an electric minivan. Now I’m all for saving the environment, but when electric cars are packed with 9 people they aren’t quite as reliable as hoped! I got a call from a very grumpy Adam saying they had to stop somewhere near Cardiff to charge the MPV. Safe to say the automatic MPV was a bit easier to manage.
Finally we had all arrived at the car park and it was time to get walking! The sun was shining and it was February in Wales!?! Who knew that was possible. We head up to Twyn Mwyalchod to start our horseshoe loop. Very quickly layers started coming off as we climbed up.
We continued along the top until we reached our lunch stop near Cefn Cul. After a solid 20 minute break, we continued on while the sun was still shining.
The top of Pen y Fan was in the clouds but that didn’t deter us. We got the compulsory group picture at the top and cracked on.
Next objective was Cribyn followed by Fan y Big. This was pretty steep but the group stuck together and fared well. We had an amazing stop at the top of Fan y Big where we got some brilliant pictures.
Now all that was left was to head back down. I unfortunately chose a path that we later found out was super boggy, but what can you expect from Wales in February!
With slightly soggy feet we trudged back to the car to complete the horseshoe loop. All that was left now was the drive back to Bath (and possibly a nap on the way).
In all it was such a fantastic day out and I really hope that everyone that came along had a great time. Hope to see you all out on the hills again soon!
