Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu stems from Judo and places a heavy emphasis on ground-based grappling.

Popularized by the Gracie family in Brazil, BJJ exploded in popularity after the exposure gained by the growth UFC. In the modern era BJJ takes heavy influence from wrestling alongside its Judo roots and is still a core component of Mixed Martial Arts.

Modern BJJ is a constantly evolving sport with a thriving professional scene that constantly innovates techniques, concepts and tactics that we as a club implement in training.

In the 2022/23 academic year several students who trained BJJ outside of university coordinated to begin training together initially under the bath active scheme and then as a suborganization of the Japanese Jiu-Jitsu Society and ran classes of up to 40 people.

The 2024/25 academic year marks the first year of an independent Bath Uni Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu society and we look forward to ongoing growth and expansion.
