SU President Blog

The one with all the chairs (but no tables)

Hello everyone!

Sorry this update is coming to you a couple of days later, but better later than ever!

In the buildup to Freshers’ Week, life for your SU officers has gotten significantly busier. We went from enjoying the summer weather and taking our lunches breaks outside, to bringing our packed lunches to the office and having it between FW videos or academic year planning meetings. We went from having time to plan and imagine what we wanted the year to look like, to filling real project plans for it all. So, the ‘quiet period’ is officially over. And so is Summer, as you can tell by simply looking outside your window.

There are two things I want to advertise today. Both of the plugs are student leadership positions that we’re recruiting for!

The first one is SUmmit chair. Here’s a link to the SUmmit webpage, for ease. The chair of this academic body – which has undergone a significant revamp under my watch, because I just love all things democratic reviews – will have to guide the discussion, have a few meetings with yours truly, and care about the student experience and what student leaders can do to improve it. It’ll look great on your CV, and it might even give you a taste of what running democratic processes looks like, and what the life of an SU officer is. So, if you’re considering running for officer next year, this is the role for you!

The next opportunity is running to be our Democratic Procedures Team (DPT) chair. The DPT chair is in charge of leading the body that organises and supervises SU elections throughout the year – everything from officer elections to committee elections. If you’re a policy neek like me, this is first-hand experience into running democratic processes and understanding the relevant policy. Admittedly, this might be a more niche sort of opportunity, but it’s certainly a transferable one if you’re applying to placements or grad schemes this year. Here’s a bit more info on DPT as a whole.

I will keep this update brief, as the next one will be full of all the pre-fresher's week's madness.

In the meantime, stay tanned and be kind to one another!

Much love,
