Education Officer Blog

Paranormal DAGtivity - a post about DAG wins for Disability History Month!

Hello lovely people ! I’m Amber – your second term Education Officer here at Bath, and if you haven’t heard me gush about it yet, did you know my final year project was to revive DAG? Now in its third year (!!!) of a consistent committee and DAGtivities, it is truly a joy to see it thrive.

But what have the big wins of DAG been so far? Well…

LIBRARY SENSORY ROOM

Absolutely the jewel in my crown, the sensory room in the library was started in my final year and carried on to my time as Officer with my successor Jess. The sensory room is the first of its kind at Bath, sits snuggled away on the third floor of the library, and has repeat bookable rooms (!!!) for DSA appointments.

SENSORY FRIENDLY HOURS

We campaigned for these back in 22/23, and managed to get them in April, and they are now embedded as standard across campus all throughout the year!

DISABILITY FRIENDLY SPORT

In collaboration with last years sport officer Abbie, a whole host of disability friendly sport was raised – from wheelchair basketball to sitting volleyball.

Not only this, but this year DAG is collaborating with the hockey club for regular, non-competitive sessions with input from both committees so that everyone is comfortable. There’s even an accessible sports lead – Lily, and the idea originally came from hockey team member Christian.

ACCESSIBILITY COMMITTEE & CAMPUS PHYSICAL ACCESSIBILITY

As chair of DAG, you join the Universities Accessibility Committee – which is the space where (primarily physical) access of campus is discussed and funded. There is even currently a display in the library foyer until the 4th about all the changes that have been made to make campus more accessible!

DAGTIVITIES

With an amazingly glorious pun, DAG has been hosting a whole bunch of activities, including collaborations across tabletop, BVGs, and the 93% club for sensory friendly gaming sessions and careers workshops.

COMING UP…

DAG is also currently working with the SU to develop disability training for SU staff and student leaders, with a hope to start running sessions in semester 2!
