Education Officer Blog

First 2 Months as SU Education Officer

So here's my first blog post! It has been a great and busy summer so far, and this is what I’ve been up to:

Conferences:

During July, four of us headed up to Leeds for the NUS Lead and Change conference. This was an incredible few days! We learnt a lot about how to be a good SU Officer with sessions on leadership, campaigning, recognising and understanding privilege and oppression, networking and coaching, wider HE policy, and more! It was also an incredibly valuable opportunity to network with officers from across the country, bounce ideas off them, and find out about initiatives in other students’ unions which could be useful to the students at Bath.

I’m also heading off to London in September for a crash course on being a student governor. This will help me make the most of my position on University Council to represent your voice.

Manifesto Progress:

Aside from settling into the role and making contacts across the university, work has already begun on ticking off those manifesto points.

My highlights so far have been working to make sure that students coming back from placement have the skills training available to them to readjust to university life smoothly, and also talking with the Chief Exec of the SU to put together a breakdown of our income and expenditure so you can see how we invest in our union to make it work for you!

What I’ve Learnt:

This summer has just been one big learning experience, and I’m so pleased to be part of the challenges and opportunities that come from being an SU Officer. So far I’ve learnt a lot about myself and the kind of leader I’d like to be, as well as a lot about the experiences of others and how I can best help you to shape your university experience and see the changes you want at Bath!

The Higher Education reforms mean that it’s a complex time to be involved in the sector, but I am ready to represent you and carry your voice forward. I’m so so excited for Freshers’ Week, welcoming all the new students to the start of an amazing journey, and also welcoming all of our returners back to the wonderful world of Bath! It’s going to be a great year for The SU Bath, and I can’t wait!
