Notes from a Small Island

15th May 2009 Spanish Societies

From Guillermo Durango on his first year here in Bath from Spain.

I am so used to it now that if someone asked me to imagine the uni without so many societies, events, clubs…I would not be able to !

However, last summer, before arriving in Bath, I was really surprised to find out in the SU website about the nearly 100 societies you could join, not to mention the sports clubs. I’m not saying that there is not an extracurricular student life in Spain: students have sports clubs to join, and also the typical societies (drama, musical, some about languages…), people participate in many different activities and get involved in things, and there is obviously a students’ union. But, at least in the universities near to where I live (I can’t really talk for the whole country), you don’t have, by far, such a big choice. I’m pretty sure you won’t find, let’s say, a Bell Ringing society or a Curry appreciation society (this one is an extreme example, I know, but you see the point).Note: We also have to take into account that curry is not very used in Spanish food !!
