We’ve got something to suit all with tuition available across vocal, woodwind, brass, piano, violin, guitar and music theory. Running in 8-week blocks each Semester, all music tuition is held in The Edge and costs £240 per Semester (£30 per hour).

Alex Johnson: Vocal Tuition

Tuesdays & Thursdays

Alex is an international tenor and voice teacher. He studied at the International Opera Academy in Belgium and has worked extensively in concerts, TV and opera throughout Europe and the UK. Alex regularly adjudicates singing competitions and will be on the panel of the Bath Opera Isobel Buchanan Award later this year.  Alex has successfully coached students to appear on the West End, with international opera companies and in TV appearances. 

Lee Risdale: Vocal Tuition

Mondays

Lee is an encouraging and experienced voice teacher of contemporary vocal styles including Rock, Pop, Soul and Musical Theatre. He shares cutting-edge knowledge and techniques while studying a Master’s degree in Voice Pedagogy and creating exclusive vocal workshops for Vocal Arts Academy. Lee performs regularly in various bands and is passionate about helping singers to achieve their goals, whether singing for fun or pursuing a career in music. He has successfully coached signed artists in the music industry including Gabrielle Aplin (Parlophone, Warner Bros), Chris Georgiadis (Turbowolf), Vanna Vee (Singer & Actress, Jusvibe Records, Moko Jumbie movie), Laura Doggett (Sony) and Matt Sellors (Yes Sir Boss). Lee is also a published author of a book combining the mindset, physicality and expression of singing entitled ‘The Complete Vocalist. 

Nicolette Brown: Piano and Violin Tuition

Thursdays

Nicola offers lessons up advanced standard in violin and up to Grade 5 standard in piano. 

Nicolette is a highly trained musician with over 30 years’ performing and teaching experience. She studied violin and piano at the Royal College of Music and then spent a year at the National Centre for Orchestral Studies, Goldsmiths’ College, London. Her successful career includes positions as assistant principal first violin in the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and principal first violin in the Bournemouth. Nicolette has always had a love of chamber music and has given many solo and chamber performances all over the UK and abroad including at the Liverpool Cathedral Festival, Fishguard Festival and performances for Channel 4 television. She enjoys preparing students for exams and performances but is equally happy to help those who simply want to play for enjoyment. She is friendly, patient and extremely dedicated to her pupils’ development. 

Susanna Downes: Piano Tuition

Fridays

Susanna studied piano performance and attained her ALCM and LGSMD diplomas between 1997 and 2000. She took on a full-time piano teaching business in 2001 and worked at St Augustine’s College in Trowbridge for over 20 years, before focusing her teaching in Bathford and the surrounding areas. She held the post of Director of Music at St Michael’s church in Bath from 2014-2020. Having worked as a professional musician playing cocktail piano, weddings, session music, recording, conducting choirs, and playing with many different musicians and ensembles at gigs and concerts, Susanna has broad experience which helps her approach teaching from many different angles.

Edward Bettella: Piano Tuition

Thursdays & Fridays

Edward began his piano studies aged 7 under concert pianist and teacher Brian Ellsbury. In the summer of 2016, Edward completed his Licentiate level diploma through Trinity College, London. He continues his studies under concert pianist and lecturer, Maria Garcia. Edward teaches a broad spectrum of ages and experience, from complete beginners to advanced levels, helping them find confidence in playing a variety of music from classical, to pop and jazz. Edward also works as a conductor, arranger and producer, helping musicians to refine their playing and performance. In his capacity as mentor on the scholarship program at Bath University, Edward regularly helps music scholars to prepare their performances for the annual Platform concert. 

Sam Brown: Guitar Tuition and Music Theory

Mondays

Sam is an international performer and experienced teacher. A graduate of the Royal College of Music, Sam has played in major venues on three continents and for theatre, radio and TV (notably snarking Danny Dyer on BBC One the other year). He is an expert coach, guitarist and lute player, most familiar with classical, early music and folk genres, and also happy to teach fingerstyle and guitar basics. His lessons can be geared equally towards competent players and complete beginners. Outside of a hectic performing and teaching schedule, Sam loves kayaking, awful puns and a mild coffee addiction.
