Job Description

MASH is the University’s mathematics and statistics help provision as part of the Mathematics Resources Centre. We provide daily drop-in support for all students, dedicated sessions for Year 1 students studying Mathematics modules and statistics advice appointments for both students and staff.

Senior Peer Tutors will use their flexible and mature mathematical knowledge and experience to provide support to students and staff.

The primary focus of the MASH Senior Peer Tutors is to manage the Year 1 maths workshops.   As the senior tutor you will be responsible for:

  • Supporting students with mathematical queries.
  • Managing the team (supervision, timetabling, briefing the team at the start of the session).
  • Developing mathematical skills in the team of peer tutors via training, monitoring, feedback, and advice.
  • Using your mature mathematical knowledge and experience to help deal with difficult queries by supporting both the student and the peer tutor.

Other duties that might be required (depending on your background and the needs of the department) include:

  • Working in our general drop-in; supporting students with mathematical and statistical queries across the University.
  • Collating and creating resources.
  • Meeting with individuals or small groups of students or staff to provide support on data collection, data organisation and data analysis.
  • Liaising with other team members and academic staff.
  • Promotion of the service.

You will be based at the University of Bath. Support and guidance will be given by core members of the MASH team but you will be responsible for carrying out appointments and providing mathematical support without assistance.

Essential skills and qualities

  • Due to the nature of this position, you must be able to provide mathematical and/or statistical support to students on any degree, including Year 1 Mathematics students. You will have the equivalent of a 3-year degree in mathematics and/or statistics. You will most likely be a final year MMath or PG student in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, but final year BSc students with suitable experience may also be considered.
  • Previous experience tutoring mathematics or statistics is essential.
  • Empathetic.
  • Ability to quickly synthesise information given by students or staff.
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Good time management.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Leadership qualities including effective delegation, confidence, and a positive attitude.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Initiative to develop own ideas.
  • Trustworthy.
