Scenario

Poppy is a Maths student who has been working on an algebra problem sheet in the library. She has written down answers for the first three questions but comes to a halt as soon as she sees question four. She notices another first year, Tom, who she does not know well, and asks him but he does not know how to start question four and has not yet managed to do questions two and three. Tom remembers that there is a MASH session and suggests they attend.

Poppy takes a seat and gets the problem sheet, her working and her algebra notes out of her bag. Tom sits down at the same table but does not take out any work. When a tutor comes over to the table Poppy immediately shows the problem sheet to the tutor and asks "How do I do question four? Are my answers for questions one, two and three correct?"

Question

Describe how you would work with Poppy and Tom in this scenario. What would you definitely do and not do? What concerns might you have? What approaches and resources would you use? What do you aim to achieve before you need to talk to other students who are waiting?
